Mink Potential visits The Wall

Stopping artists from hitting brick walls by Tracey Lien

22-01-2009

My dream of becoming a full time artist never came to fruition because one day I woke up, and realised that I would be poor and emaciated for the rest of my le. Seeing that I was already poor and emaciated at the time, I didn't want to encourage that, so nowadays, I just paint for fun.

Mink Potential loves Extra Cheeese

What's Cooking? Extra Cheeese!

22-01-2009

On a good day, my pizza box goes into the recycling bin. On a bad day, out the window and into some landfill (neighbour's backyard). Clearly, I am not the most innovative of all people, nor am I the most environmentally conscious, which is why I am glad that Extra Cheeese is there to do for us what we are so unwilling to do for the ourselves (and the rest of the world): create masterly aesthetic artworks that blow audiences out of the water, whilst doing something useful with those damn pizza boxes.

12x12 Exhibition

by Tracey Lien

22-01-2009
To the untrained eye, aMBUSH gallery has the exterior of an abandoned warehouse, tucked away in the district of Waterloo. To the trained eye, the gallery's exterior is considered “indie”, although this would be a euphemism for “really ugly”. It reminded me of something molded clumsily out of clay and spray painted white. Ugliness aside, the contents of the building on Friday night were impressively not-ugly, to say the least, when aMBUSH played host to 12X12, an exhibition that armed 12 Australian artists with 12 canvases that were 12 by 12 inches.

“And turn right at the next street and it should be there” Tristan, Mink Magazine’s Art Director said. “Do you think that could be it?” I pointed and said grinning at Tristan. In front of us, a little to the right, was a building with huge letters sprawled across the…

Intriguing Nostalgia - Tanya Pshenychny

by Tracey Lien

03-12-2007

From sweeping, subtle shades of water-colour drenched sheets of paper to sharp photographs that transport viewers into another dimension, Tanya Pshenychny's art is nothing short of brilliant.

Chalk the Walk Festival

by Biwa Kwan

30-10-2007

The pavement was their canvas and chalk was the tool of choice. Over four days Pyrmont Bridge became a site for what some would call “graffiti”, yet for the forty artists who struggled against the rain, wind and sun; it was all done in the name of art.

KABOOM!

by Biwa Kwan

29-10-2007

You had to admire the visionary talent on display at Carlton’s Shopfront theatre over the weekend.

Six emerging artists, aged 18-25, had the product of a year’s blood, sweat and tears on show for the scrutiny and consumption of perhaps their harshest critics – an opening night audience.

Fani1

This months Don't Panic Poster Artist

26-10-2007
Behind the pseudonym of Fani 1 is an artist whose love for the visual arts has taken her around the world and into the Don't Panic poster collection. With her poster design, Evolution, being the latest addition to the coveted poster packs, Mink Magazine decided to catch up with the artist herself, Natalie Cowx, to discuss art, life, and future projects that will no doubt propel her further into artistic stardom.

Fairfield High School Gifted and Talented Visual Arts Annual Exhibition

by Tracey Lien

28-08-2007
Parents tend to scorn contemporary artworks in galleries, claiming that their children can do better. In the case of Fairfield High School's Gifted and Talented Visual Arts program, the children can and do do it better. Actually, allow me to correct myself -- they're not 'children', they're young artists; and I say this without a trace of condescension or sarcasm. In the spirit of Mink Potential's talent-scouting mission, I decided to drag my Minkette arse to one of South-West Sydney's hubs to check out the Fairfield High School annual art exhibition, and sample the free refreshments.

Aunia Kahn

by Elsa Evers

17-07-2007
Aunia Kahn poses for a photo at an exhibition. She stands proudly next to her artworks, her pink trimmed knee-highs making her almost taller than the converted doors where her pictures hang. With a pink sash hoisting in the black layers around the waist, she pulls back her shoulders and smiles.
